Today’s edition of Bring It On! focuses on Black Philanthropy Month (BPM). BPM is held every August and was created in August 2011 by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network (PAWPNet) as an annual, global celebration of African-descent giving. Hosts Clarence Boone and Roberta Radovich discuss Black Philanthropy Month with Ms. Valaidia Fulwood, Professor Tyrone McKinley Freeman, and Mr. Tom Harmon.

Ms. Valaidia Fullwood is a nationally known writer, public speaker and project strategist. She is author of “Giving Back: A Tribute to Generations of African American Philanthropists,” an award-winning book chronicling tradition of giving in Black communities. In 2014, she was selected Lake Distinguished Visitor by Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

Professor Tyrone McKinley Freeman is Assistant Professor of Philanthropic Studies and the Director of Undergraduate Programs at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. His research focuses on African American philanthropy in historical and contemporary contexts, the history of philanthropy, and philanthropy and fundraising in higher education.

Mr. Tom Harmon is the CEO of Harmon Group Companies, which includes Harmon Construction, Harmon Steel, and Taylor Bros Construction Inc.  He is one of the founding members of the  African American Fund of Bartholomew County (AAFBC). Found in 2012, AAFBC is a part of the Heritage Fund, which is the Community Foundation of Bartholomew County. The AAFBC distributes grants of about $15,000 annually and sponsors discussions in five focus areas: health awareness, education, arts and culture, economic/career development, and leadership development, which targets the African American Community.

BPM is held every August and was created in August 2011 by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network (PAWPNet) as an annual, global celebration of African-descent giving. In 2011 the United Nations recognized BPM as part of its declaration for the International Year for People of African Descent and encouraged all Black communities and their allies to take August and beyond to promote the power of giving to transform lives.
