“Sleep-In” at City Hall

Play

The Bloomington City Council meeting last night was dedicated almost exclusively to a discussion on homelessness in the community. Dozens of protesters came to the meeting to voice opinions about the lack of a low-barrier summer shelter this year. In years past, the Genesis Church has hosted a summer shelter, but the church chose not to this year. Last month, a community group set up a temporary shelter using a large, military-style tent on a vacant lot on West 11th Street. The tent stood for five days before the city threatened a fine of $2,500 a day for violations of city code. The tent was taken down April 29th. As the Council meeting occurred last night, about 25 people lay on sleeping bags outside the Council chambers in what they called a sleep-in to protest of the removal of the tent.WFHB Assistant News Director Joe Crawford was at city hall last night, and he brings us this report.
