ObamaCare’s Cost to Local Government

As deadlines loom for implementing provisions of the federal Affordable Care Act, sometimes called Obama Care, some parts of local government say they may be approaching financial predicaments. Starting next year, many of the rules around health insurance will change for schools, cities and counties, just as they will for individuals and businesses. One of those new rules means those governmental entities will have to offer health insurance to some of their part-time workers, like bus drivers or teacher aides, depending on how much those employees work. But with many budgets tight already, at least one local school district has suggested cutting employee hours. And others say they haven’t decided how to handle the dilemma. For today’s WFHB feature exclusive, we look at how some local governments are preparing for 2014, when many parts of the Affordable Care Act will take effect.
