Local Initiatives Help Rehabilitate Recently Released Ex-Cons

IU student correspondent Julie Masterson reports that for many people convicted of crimes, the hardest part of going to jail is getting out. Re-entering society can be tough; especially for those who are still prisoners to addiction, mental illness, and poverty. As the Monroe County Jail becomes increasingly overcrowded, the court systems and local organizatoins have initiatives aimed at trying to help inmates get out and stay out.

Each Monday during June and July, the Daily Local News is bringing you reports produced through a partnership between WFHB and Indiana University’s J460 Community Journalism class taught by Professor Mike Conway. During the spring semester, students volunteered at WFHB and produced final projects about a variety of underreported subjects, from wealth inequality to racial justice. This story is the fifth in our series.
