IU To Demo Crosstown Plaza

Indiana University will be redeveloping Crosstown Plaza, on 10th street in Bloomington. The plaza is home to several local businesses, including Lennie’s Restaurant and Pub, Pizza X, Soma, and the 10th Street Market. Currently, the lot is divided into two sections, Crosstown One, on the East side of the plaza, and Crosstown Two, on the West Side.

This weekend, Crosstown One businesses—including the 10th Street Market and Soma—were told to vacate their properties by August 1st. IU’s planned redevelopment of the 10th street plaza was reportedly known to all the effected businesses. Jeff Mease, CEO of One World Enterprises—which owns Lennie’s, Pizza X, and Bloomington Brewing Company—says he was notified to vacate because One World Enterprises has an office in Crosstown 1.

The new office buildings at Crosstown 1 and 2 are expected to be three stories tall, with commercial office space on the top two stories, and retail space on the ground floor. Mease says Lennie’s and Pizza X, which are currently located in Crosstown 2, will move into the new 3-story office complex in Crosstown 1, once it’s completed.

Mease says One World is hoping the new Crosstown 1 building will be completed before the demolition starts in Crosstown 2. Mease says they’re expecting the new building to be about the same seating and size as the current Lennie’s restaurant. Pizza X would move into a slightly smaller kitchen area, and production of Bloomington Brewing Company, currently located in Lennie’s, would be moved out to a different facility.

Mease says, as far as he’s aware, there won’t be any additional parking, even as IU adds two more stories of businesses to the 10th street Crosstown plaza. IU is expected to begin bulldozing the Crosstown 1 development as early as this Fall. The new three-story office and retail building is expected to be completed in about two years.
