Interchange – Crossing the Middle Passage: Maria Abegunde

Play

Host William Morris speaks with poet and author Maria Eliza Hamilton Bispo de Jesus Abegunde about a momentous journey she took across one leg of the Middle Passage, the maritime route over which millions of African slaves were brought to the New World. As a member and team leader of a UNESCO Core Team on the Slave Route Project, Abegunde captured her experience through poetry and journals in which she is challenged to “recover the lost voices” of slaves who centuries ago crossed over the very same waters.  With a powerfully profound use of words and language, she shares her poetry, journal entries and vivid recollections, all of which invite listeners to join her as she retrace her trip from Puerto Rico to Brasil along a key leg of the Middle Passage.
