FEATURE
The Somali civil war only now is winding down after raging across the horn of Africa for 30 years. A generation of young people have grown up amid the horrors there. Two of them, Sa’ad Hussein and Saadiq Mohhamed, have managed to become world class soccer players even after the sport was outlawed for a time. Filmmaker J.R. Biersmith has followed their journey to escape the violence in Somalia and come to the United States to play the game they love. Biersmith’s documentary, “Men in the Arena,” is being shown on college campuses and in film festivals around the country. It will play Wednesday, October 26, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, the day after Saadiq’s St. Louis University team faces the Indiana University Hoosiers. J.R. Biersmith and the film’s local promoter Tyler Ferguson join Michael Glab on this week’s edition of Big Talk.
