County Probation Budget Woes

Play

Monroe County’s probation department is approaching a financial dilemma, according to County Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Todd. Last month Todd told the County Council there is increasing strain on the County’s 45 probation officers, who are handling a larger and larger population as the state restricts the number of inmates that can be housed in Indiana prisons, the County jail remains packed and, consequently, more serious offenders are referred to the probation department. There are currently about 2,400 people on probation in the County. At the same time, some of the funds that have been used to pay officers’ salaries are drying up. WFHB Assistant News Director Joe Crawford spoke with Todd about the budget shortfall, for today’s WFHB feature exclusive.
