In 2012, many people who worked and studied in the public schools of Pasadena, California, made their lives available for a large project: the portrait of one day in the life of an American school district.

Go Public is remarkable for what it does not contain. There are no outside experts consulted in this movie, no voice-over narration, no soundtrack other than the sounds that were recorded by the camera crews. Fifty filmmakers followed fifty people—janitors, the superintendent, students, teachers, and parents—on a spring day that ended in a school board meeting. What emerges is not a tidy narrative, but a layered portrait of the complicated work of serving a racially integrated population of children with diverse needs, resources, and abilities.

The screening will be followed by a short discussion.
