State Senate Passes Teacher Firearms Training Bill

The State Senate passed a bill to create special firearms training for teachers. House Bill 1253 will require that teachers and staff members complete at least 40 hours of firearms training, before they can carry a firearm on campus. Faculty will also be required to pass a mental health assessment test, to prove they are fit to carry a firearm. …

CASA to Begin Advocate Training

Monroe County CASA begins its fall advocate training on October 18th. CASA is short for court appointed special advocates. CASAs advocate in the courts on behalf of juveniles who have been subjected to abuse or neglect. Jim Shelton is a member of the Monroe County CASA’s Board of Trustees. Agreement Could Lead to Higher Pay for Jail Employees

The Monroe County Commissioners approved a one-year collective bargaining agreement with county jail staff yesterday. County Attorney Jeff Cockerill told Commissioners yesterday the agreement could eventually lead to pay increases for jail employees. Cockerill said employee retention is partially driving the salary review. Jail Commander, Sam Crow is not party to the contract, but he voiced his support for it. …

Legislators to Take Ethics, Sexual Harassment Trainings

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed a bill this afternoon, putting in place sexual harassment policies for state legislators. House Bill 1309, requires all members of the Indiana General Assembly to undergo no less than an hour of annual sexual harassment prevention training, and no less than an hour of ethics training.
