Brown Co. Parks Director Signed Off on Logging

The Brown County Parks and Recreation Dept. signed off on a logging contract that clear-cut a scenic overlook. At least one acre was logged along both sides of N. Highway 135, south of Bean Blossom. Monroe County Asks For More Conversation About Hoosier Logging

The County Council signed a letter to the Hoosier National Forest’s district ranger, asking for broader public discussion of the pending Houston South project. The project calls for logging of approximately four thousand acres within the Hoosier National Forest. Indiana’s second highest ranking public official, Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch, is encouraging the expansion of the state’s timber industry. Lt. Gov. Crouch unveiled a strategic report on Tuesday, at the annual meeting of the Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association, in downtown Indianapolis. Report Blasts DNR for Lack of Transparency, Poor Forest Stewardship

A new report, released yesterday by the Indiana Forest Alliance, timber sales on public land average lower returns than private timber sales. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Department of Forestry is responsible for managing the state’s forests.
