Indiana Law Overcrowding County Jails

Jails across Indiana are overcrowded. That’s due, in part, to a 2016 state law, requiring non-violent felons to serve their sentences in county jails, rather than in state prisons. This influx of non-violent felons swelled the number of prisoners housed at county jails, which also hold those awaiting trial. Tax Increase Under Consideration To Combat Overcrowded Monroe County Jails

The Indiana Sheriff’s Association proposed a tax rate increase to ease overcrowding of low-level felons in County Jails, last week. The rate is currently at thirty-five dollars per day for a low level felons and the proposed twenty dollar increase would aid in solving overcrowded jails, says Hendricks County Sheriff, Brett Clark.
