Pioneering Firefighter Jean Magrane

Play

The first female firefighter in the history of the Bloomington Fire Department, Jean Magrane retired in 2013 after breaking the gender barrier in 1987. She passed the department’s physical agility test after several previous women had failed, then she was promoted to sergeant and eventually captain in charge of her own crew. It wasn’t easy being the lone woman in an all-male firehouse but Magrane had the strength and will to persevere. It took years for her to earn the respect and trust of her firefighting colleagues.

Michael Glab goes one-on-one with Bloomington’s most fascinating people every Thursday at 5:30pm. Tune in for a bonus feature, Big Talk Extra, every Monday on the Daily Local News at 5:00pm for added chat from the previous week’s show.
