2019 Legislative Priorities Include Hate Crimes, Medical Marijuana, Education

Midterm elections earlier this month left Democrats in the state with just 10 of 50 seats in the State Senate. Democrats control 33 seats in the 100 member State House of Representatives, leaving Republicans with another super-majority in Indiana, until 2020.

Despite their super-majority, Senate Democrat Mark Stoops said Republicans will need to reach across the aisle to advance at least one legislative item this session: In Fall, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb announced he’s making it a legislative priority to advance Hate Crimes legislation in the state. The announcement came after a Carmel synagogue was defaced with swastikas and an Iron Cross. Indiana is currently one of just five states in the nation without hate crimes legislation.
