Jeannine Bell, IU Maurer Law School Professor, and author of recently published “Hate Thy Neighbor,” spoke to members of the organization, Democracy for Monroe County on November 8th, 2013. Professor Bell discussed the recent verdict of the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman trial and its implications for states like Indiana with similar “Stand your Ground” laws. She has extensive experience writing on hate crimes and speech within the legislative context that it occurs. In this presentation Professor Bell challenges the audience to consider what the verdict reflects about the issue of race in our society as a whole.
