Standing Room Only – Racial Prejudice and the Drug War, Part 2

On Tuesday November 5th a forum on the drug-war was held in the City Council Chambers in Bloomington . The NAACP is the primary sponsor of a forum which examined the effects of the War on Drugs and alternatives to it. IU Professor Audrey McCluskey served as moderator, and discussed the racial injustice of the drug war using the book “The New Jim Crow.” Chad Padgett will represent Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP). Matt Pierce, district representative for Bloomington and Joe Dillon, Vice-President of the National Organization for the Reform Marijuana Laws (NORML). An ambassador’s view of the Syrian conflict.

On Thursday November 7th Former Ambassador to Syria Rajendra Abhyankar provided an overview of the situation and helped audience members understand the complexities of the war, chemical weapons, and UN Resolutions. Indiana University student and Syrian native Rahaf Safi will share viewpoints and anecdotes from her family back home and discuss humanitarian concerns. On Saturday November 23rd The Brown County Democratic Party invited the public to join a brown bag lunch session with Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz and the Director and Founder of Hoosiers for a Commonsense Health Plan Rob Stone, M.D. The event was free to the public, and included a question and answer period. Part 1 focused on Education and Part 2 explores Health issues here in the Hoosier State. Standing Room Only – Komozi Woodard:Roots of the Trayvon Martin Case: Violent Whiteness and Black Resistance

Drawing on his research into the 1970s Stop Killer Cop Campaigns and the 1980s National Black United Front, Komozi Woodard will connect the dots of resistance to violent whiteness yesterday, today and tomorrow. Komozi Woodard is the author of A Nation Within a Nation and editor of the The Black Power Movement, Part I as well as other things. Woodard spoke at the Neal Marshall Centers Bridgewater lounge on October 21st 2013, For Standing room only, on WFHB.

Howard Zinn: Correcting History

In honor of Howard Zinn scholars and activists from across the country  took part in a read-in of Zinn’s work on campuses across the nation On Tuesday, Nov. 5,  The read-in was organized by members of the IU-Bloomington Progressive Faculty and Staff Caucus. Speakers include Prof. Alex Lichtenstein, Purnima Bose, Sarah Knott, Stepanka Korytova, Isabel Piedmont-Smith. Standing Room Only – Lee Hamilton: A Conversation about Iran

On Thursday, October 17th Former Congressman Lee Hamilton discussed the prospect of diplomacy with Iran. Lee H. Hamilton is Director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University. From 1965 to 1999 he served Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives, where his chairmanships included the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the Select Committee to Investigate Covert Arms Transactions with Iran. The event was open to the public and included a Question and Answer period. Standing Room Only – Evidence-Based Probation

On Thursday September 5, Monroe Circuit Court Probation Department conducted a presentation to report on becoming an evidence-based organization. The new system changed the scope and focus of the Probation Department’s policies. The upgrades were implemented to reduce the recidivism rate of offenders. On Tuesday, October First The Bloomington Chamber of Commerce presented an educational forum. The forum was open to the public and featured audience discussions. Speakers included Glenda Ritz, Indiana’s State Superintendent and Jeb Conrad, President of The Bloomington Chamber of Commerce.
