On April 10th in Bloomington Indiana Alternative Radio’s David Barsamian he spoke about his lifetime of work as an independent media producer, and the convergence of media, capitalism, and the environment. On May 2, 2014 Will Fellows, author of Farm Boys and A Passion to Preserve, gave a presentation to an audience at the Buskirk Chumley theater. The lecture covered the material in his most recent book, A Passion to Preserve. In the book Mr. Fellows analyzes how an affinity for historic preservation is commonly shared by gay men and straight women. He examines the specific cultural identity of gay men that leads to this seeming stereotype being true in many cases. The lecture kicked off National Preservation month and is part of the Rosemary P. On Wednesday April 16th A speaking group assembled to discuss “racenomics.” This event centered on the role of race in politics and economics; specifically as it relates to black people. This event was hosted by the Alphas and Kappas of Indiana University Speakers included: Dr. Byron Craig, Eric Ryans, and Dr. Umar Johnson. On April 1st James Craigie and others spoke as part of the IU school of Public Health’s lecture series. The lecture was titled. Advancing Public Health Is Good for Business: The Role of Public-Private Partnerships in Life Sciences. Specifically the lecture is about the synergetic partnership of large corporations and research entities. Speakers included James Craigie Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Church & Dwight Co., Inc, Michael Reese with the School of Public Health, Bruce Weiss, Vice President of Marketing for Trojan and others. On Saturday March 1st, local legislators gathered for a question and comment
session in Bloomington. This event was free and open to the public. Speakers

On Monday, March 24 Sage Steele spoke as part of the IU School of Journalism’s spring speaker series. She is host of ESPN’s “NBA Countdown” and contributes to the network’s “SportsCenter” program. Steele is an IU gradute and has come back to talk about sports journalism and her work in a heavily-male field. On Wednesday, February 19th the League of Women Voters hosted an informational session on Genetically Modified Organisms with three distinguished speakers. George Hageman, Professor Emeritus in Microbiology at Indiana University opened the program with an overview and some background on the history and uses of genetically modified organisms for agriculture. Then Kyle Cline, National Policy advisor for the Indiana Farm Bureau, and Marti Crouch, a plant scientist at Indiana University and advisor on issues of agriculture and technology, presented their views on the multifaceted sides of this complex issue followed by questions from the audience. Larry Barker, Executive Director for the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District, spoke on January 22, 2014 about the benefits of a Material Recovery Facility for Monroe County. Mr. Barker was invited to the Banquet Facility of Upland Brewery on West 11th street to speak by “Green Drinks,” an informal social networking event that meets every month to discuss and debate ideas on making a greener world. The presentation covered the different types of recycling streams, how facilities process them, and the legislative hurdles in setting up such facilities. On Thursday February 13 Reddit Founder Alexis Ohanian came to Indiana University as part of a speaking tour. Alexis is an entrepreneur, investor, and most well known for co-founding the social news site Reddit. The Union Board and the Informatics and Computing Student Association have eagerly collaborated to host Alexis for a talk on how to make the world suck less following the release of his book Without Their Permission.
