Standing Room Only – Maya Kucherskaya: Church and Society in Contemporary Russia

Multi-talented Maya Kucherskaya, a renowned author of fiction and literature and an accomplished journalist shared her story at an author exposition hosted by the IU department of Slavic languages and the department of religious studies. Much of her work centers on the Russian Orthodox church and its interaction with more emergent aspects of  eastern European culture. Kucherskaya spoke at Indiana University Bloomington and was recorded by the Russian and East European Institute which shared it with Standing Room Only, on WFHB.

Federal Focus Luncheon with Evan Bayh

On April 14th an event was held to bring the public up to speed on events and trends in Washington D.C. The Bloomington Chamber of Commerce organized this episode of a reoccurring event called a Federal Focus Luncheon. This “Federal Focus Luncheon” featured many speakers, but former Indiana Governor and U.S. Senator Evan Bayh took the stage for most of the event. Bayh centered on his experience in the U.S. senate and the way federal trends will affect local politics. The event was recorded on location at President’s Hall on IU’s campus, by Community Access Television Services, for Standing Room Only on WFHB.

Standing Room Only – Alternative Voice with David Barsamian Part 2

On April 10th in Bloomington Indiana Alternative Radio’s David Barsamian spoke about his lifetime of work as an independent media producer, and the convergence of media, capitalism, and the environment. The second part of this presentation begins with American foreign policy and the media. Mr. Barsamian and Dr. Martha Crouch were the primary speakers and the event was recorded on location at the Bloomington Monroe County Convention Center by WFHB’s Alycin Bektesh for Standing Room Only, on WFHB.

Gay Sensibility in Historical Preservation: Will Fellows discusses his “passion to preserve”

On May 2, 2014 Will Fellows, author of Farm Boys and A Passion to Preserve, gave a presentation to an audience at the Buskirk Chumley theater. The lecture covered the material in his most recent book, A Passion to Preserve. In the book Mr. Fellows analyzes how an affinity for historic preservation is commonly shared by gay men and straight women. He examines the specific cultural identity of gay men that leads to this seeming stereotype being true in many cases. The lecture kicked off National Preservation month and is part of the Rosemary P. Miller lecture series. The talk was recorded live on location for Standing room only, on WFHB.

Standing Room Only – Racenomics: Racial Politics and Class

On Wednesday April 16th A speaking group assembled to discuss “racenomics.” This event centered on the role of race in politics and economics; specifically as it relates to black people. This event was hosted by the Alphas and Kappas of Indiana University Speakers included: Dr. Byron Craig, Eric Ryans, and Dr. Umar Johnson. This event was recorded by Daion Morton for Standing Room Only, on WFHB.

On April 1st James Craigie and others spoke as part of the IU school of Public Health’s lecture series. The lecture was titled. Advancing Public Health Is Good for Business: The Role of Public-Private Partnerships in Life Sciences. Specifically the lecture is about the synergetic partnership of large corporations and research entities. Speakers included James Craigie Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Church & Dwight Co., Inc, Michael Reese with the School of Public Health, Bruce Weiss, Vice President of Marketing for Trojan and others. This event was recorded on location the IU Memorial Union  for Standing Room Only, on WFHB.

Local Legislators March 2014

On Saturday March 1st, local legislators gathered for a question and comment
session in Bloomington. This event was free and open to the public. Speakers
included: Mark Stoops, Eric Cook, Matt Pierce , and Matt Ubelhor. This event
was recorded on location at City Hall in Bloomington by Community Access
Television Services for Standing Room Only, on WFHB.

Sage Advice: Sage Steele on Sports Journalism

On Monday, March 24 Sage Steele spoke as part of the IU School of Journalism’s spring speaker series. She is host of ESPN’s “NBA Countdown” and contributes to the network’s “SportsCenter” program. Steele is an IU gradute and has come back to talk about sports journalism and her work in a heavily-male field. This event was recorded on location at the Buskirk Chumley Theatre by Alycin Bektesh for Standing Room Only, on WFHB.
