Right to Walk Out Overturned

Indiana became the first state to pass through Right to Work legislation in almost twenty years. The bill was signed in to law last spring, after two years of heated debates within the Indiana Legislature. In an effort to block the passage of the proposed right to work bill in 2011, Democratic State Representatives collectively did not show up to the statehouse, which prevented the quorum needed for a successful vote on the bill. In retaliation for this tactic, the Republican controlled legislative body imposed fines on the absent representatives. Democrats challenged the legality of the pay withholding, and were successful in their lawsuit. However, the case was challenged in the Indiana Supreme Court, and yesterday the court ruled in a split decision that the pay withholding was legal. WFHB News Director Alycin Bektesh spoke on the phone today with the Indiana Democrats about the ruling, and it’s implications for future negotiations in the Indiana legislature, for today’s WFHB feature exclusive.
