Rep. Pierce Tours Yellowwood’s Back Country Logging

Play

State Rep. Matt Pierce (D-Bloomington) toured logging areas of Yellowwood State Forest last week.

Pierce says he hiked through the Back Country area, where a Department of Natural Resources contractor is removing 1,700 trees, with the Indiana Forest Alliance’s Dave Seastrom.

Pierce says the Indiana DNR designated Yellowwood’s Back Country area back in the ‘80’s, in an effort to preserve it. Area residents, including Seastrom, protested against the DNR’s proposed logging of the Back Country area late last year. The DNR proceeded to contract out the logging anyway. Pierce says the logging has caused environmental damage throughout the area. The DNR lists the area as off-limits to the general public.

Pierce has previously filed legislation aiming to increase the percentage of protected forests in the state. He says he doesn’t believe May’s special legislative session is likely to see any push to protect the state’s forests, as Republican legislators have their own agenda handed down from Governor Eric Holcomb. Pierce says new legislation likely won’t be brought up until January of 2019.
