Poverty Percentages in Bloomington

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Bloomington, Indiana’s poverty rate stands at 39.9 percent. The average poverty rate for the state was 14.1 percent in 2010. Through the years, Bloomington officials have generally attributed the high poverty rate in the city to the population of students attending Indiana University. But other cities around the nation with a comparable population size and student population seem to suggest that the student population is not the sole reason Bloomington’s poverty rate is so high. WFHB correspondent Cleveland Dietz investigated the issue.
