Patriotism in the Era of Trump: A Fourth of July Special

Play

As Americans celebrated the 240th anniversary of the 13 colonies declaring independence from the British empire, we stopped by Bloomington’s Fourth of July parade to talk with local people about patriotism and nationalism in the era of Donald Trump and Brexit.

As usual, the City of Bloomington put together a big holiday parade this morning starting at 10 a.m. It ran through downtown – heading west from the intersection of 7th and Indiana, then curling around and moving east down Kirkwood Avenue.

WFHB News Director Joe Crawford caught up with a bunch of local activists, three different delegates to the Democratic National Convention, a Marine veteran who just returned to Bloomington after almost 5 decades away, an Irish immigrant with some thoughts about Brexit, an Afghanistan war vet marching with a sniper rifle on his shoulder, and Beanpole, the god of pointless behavior.
