IU Health broke ground on its new Bloomington Hospital this morning.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb and IU President Michael McRobbie were among the keynote speakers who addressed a crowd in IU’s Memorial Stadium. IU Health spokesperson Teri Dematas says although this morning’s assembly was ceremonial, crews are expected to begin construction of the new hospital within the coming months.

The city of Bloomington entered into an agreement with IU Health to purchase all 24 acres of the current, Second Street hospital property. An IU Health contracted assessment of that property valued it at 16 million dollars. Bloomington has agreed to pay six and a half million dollars for the property.

In a press release issued this afternoon, IU Health stated the over 700,000 square- foot complex will serve Bloomington and the surrounding region and will include a cancer center, surgical services, a women’s center, neonatal intensive care, physician offices and a trauma center.

A state-of- the-art health care simulation center used to train students and clinicians on new patient care techniques, will be shared by IU Health and IU.

The new hospital will also include the IU Academic Health Sciences Building, which will consolidate most of the academic health science programs on the IU Bloomington campus including those in medicine, nursing, social work and speech and hearing, and will include a new program in dentistry.
