More Police Hired To Patrol Downtown

Play

The Bloomington Police Department has hired more police to patrol downtown, following the recommendations of a task force assembled by Mayor John Hamilton. Police chief Michael Diekhoff told the Herald-Times the four extra officers would focus attention on drug use, fighting, and public consumption of alcohol. Diekhoff has not responded to a request for comment from WFHB. In recent years Diekhoff has repeatedly said he doesn’t believe Bloomington can “arrest ourselves of this problem,” referring to issues surrounding poverty and nuisance crimes downtown. Police have already held what they call roll call at Peoples Park, a place frequented by people experiencing homelessness. Although the increased police presence was recommended by the mayor’s task force, the hire of more police has not been debated in public meetings.
