This week, we are sharing a conversation we had with Kristian Williams, author of Our Enemies in Blue and American Methods: Torture and the Logic of Domination. Kristian spoke at IU earlier this month on the history of policing in America, but we were eager to pick his brain about the intersections of police, racism, and prisons. He argues that exceptional instances of torture – Abu Ghraib for example – rest firmly on a daily and banal foundation of normalized torment, mistreatment and violence. This relationship is familiar to us from long letters we’ve received from the Secure Housing Unit at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility and from the deaths in custody quietly covered up in the Westville Maximum Security Unit here in Indiana.
