Interchange – Fighting Illiteracy; Journalism Students in Kenya

Literacy mentor and teacher Anabel Newman joined William Morris for a conversation about her long and distinguished work in fighting adult illiteracy in Indiana and across America. Among the insights she shared was her formula for teaching reading skills: Model, Motivation, Interests, Perseverance and Positive Pressure. In the second segment, new Interchange reporter Susan Hu talked with IU Journalism students Christine Kratzne and Sean Morrison about their recent three-week journey to Kenya, where they gained invaluable insight into African culture, Kenya’s struggle with HIV and AIDS, and the power of intercultural cooperation. In “The Last Minute”, Saudi Arabian citizen Hany AlSalmi, a recent graduate of IU’s Graduate School of Information Technology, shared his perceptions about 3 1/2 years of living in Bloomington, post-9/11.
