Interchange – 2010 Year in Review: Andy Mahler, Tom Healy, Steve Higgs

Play

Host Andy Mahler discusses the good, the bad, and the ugly from Indiana news stories that received attention in the year 2010, and some that didn’t get the attention they deserved. Guests Steve Higgs, editor of the Bloomington Alternative, and Tom Healy, publisher of Branches magazine, cover a wide variety of topics, including an alarming epidemic of autism and other learning disabilities among children in the Ohio River Valley and around the world, which correlates with the widespread use of vaccines containing mercury and the toxic stew of environmental poisons to which children are increasingly exposed. We also review state energy policy, with a focus on the fiasco surrounding the revolving door between regulators and regulated industries in the Hoosier state as exemplified in the scandal surrounding Duke Energy’s coal-fired power plant currently under construction in Edwardsport. Other topics include such perennials as the I-69 interstate expansion, confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and new threats to forests and community health from a wave of proposed biomass incinerators.
