Hundreds of Students Walk Out for Gun Reform

Play

Over 500 Monroe County Community School Corporation high-schoolers walked out of class this morning at 10 a.m., as part of a national protest for gun reform.

The students gathered at the Monroe County Courthouse, in downtown Bloomington, before marching to Third Street Park. Seventeen year-old Caleb Poer, a Bloomington High School North student, was one of the primary organizers of the protest. He said the walkout falls on the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting, on April 20, 1999. During the protest, Poer read aloud the names of students that were killed that day. The protesters then held a minute and a half of silent vigil, in honor of the shooting victims.

The protest saw hundreds of MCCSC students walk out of class. Similar walkouts occurred in Bedford and Ellettsville.
