Head Start Expansion

Play

A federal grant will fund a major expansion of the Head Start program in Monroe County, operated by the South Central Community Action Program. The grant will enable SCCAP to create an Early Head Start Program serving infants from 0-3 years of age and pregnant moms. While Head Start has served 3 to 5 year olds from low-income families in Monroe County for almost 45 years, the new Early Start program will be the first federally funded low-cost program in the county to provide child care and development services to children at the most critical time in their development – from birth to three years old. We hear from local Head Start director Shirley Stumpner, who says this program will be a crucial new resource for families who need low-cost child care so they can hold down jobs or further their education as we go on-location to City Hall for yesterday’s announcement of the Head Start expansion.
