From Cotton Fields to College Campuses: Charlie Nelms

Play

He was born to subsistence sharecroppers in Arkansas. One of 11 children, Charlie Nelms’ love affair with reading began when the farm’s landlord started bringing a weekly delivery of newspapers and news magazines. Nelms’ parents told him and his siblings they could grow up to be anything they wanted to be and the kids took their lesson to heart. Nelms became a sought-after college administrator, chancellor of several universities, and a passionate advocate for Historic Black Colleges and Universities. Semi-retired now, he still works as a motivational speaker and champion for HBCUs. This is part one of a two-part Big Talk; the second part will air Thursday, January 16, 2020.

Host Michael Glab goes one-on-one with Bloomington’s most fascinating people every Thursday at 5:30pm. Tune in for a bonus feature, Big Talk Extra, every Monday on the Daily Local News at 5:00pm for added chat from the previous week’s show.
