Fracking Cracks Into Indiana

Play

The drilling process known as hydraulic fracturing — or fracking — has drawn increased scrutiny around the United State and the world in recent years. Reports of water contamination and other pollution from the process have prompted many states to ban or somehow regulate fracking. Last year, even the conservative Indiana legislature passed a law further regulating companies that use the procedure. While Indiana is no powerhouse in the natural gas industry, the state’s Department of Natural Resources says there are 250 to 300 new wells each year, and almost a quarter of them use fracking. Now there’s another bill at the Statehouse that would go further to regulate the controversial technique. WFHB Assistant News Director Joe Crawford has this report for today’s feature exclusive.
