Formula Business Ordinance Group: Restricting Chain Stores Downtown

Play

Members of the new Formula Business Ordinance Group clash in a discussion of Mayor Mark Kruzan’s request to put controls on the presence of chain stores and restaurants, or “formula businesses,” in Bloomington’s downtown areas. The Ordinance Group has heard presentations from the Mayor and other city officials on why such controls might be needed for downtown business corridors from the courthouse square up Kirkwood Avenue to IU’s Sample Gates, the B-Line Trail, and along Restaurant Row on Fourth Street. But some group members aren’t buying it – local property managers Eric Stolberg and Jim Murphy expressed strong opposition to any restrictions at all, saying they don’t think downtown is in danger of being taken over by chain stores. Other members tried to crystallize exactly what problems such an ordinance would address or prevent. Kruzan clarifies his intentions after an introduction by city planning director Tom Micuda in this WFHB radio exclusive.
