WFHB was on hand and broadcast the speeches live. We present highlights from the rally for today’s Daily Local News feature report. On the last day of the 2013 sessions, The Supreme Court issued rulings on marriage equality cases: United States v. Windsor and Hollingsworth v. Perry. Deferring to federalism and state’s rights, the ruling in United States v. Windsor effectively struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996, which restricted federally recognized marriages to heterosexual couples. Hollingsworth v. Perry addressed the constitutionality of California Proposition 8 which also restricts the definition of marriage to being between one man and one woman. Proposition 8 was overruled in a lower court, and brought to the Supreme Court by proponents of the marriage restrictions, but the Supreme Court ruled that the proponents did not have a case against the lower court’s ruling. Indiana’s House Joint Resolution 6, which has passed once in the Indiana legislature and needs to pass a second time before going to referendum, also states that marriage will only be recognized within the state if it is between one man and one woman. Last night, after the announcement of the historic rulings by the Supreme Court, local marriage equality group FairTalk held a rally in downtown Bloomington at Rachel’s Cafe. Fair Talk President Jean Capler, Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan, Rabbi Brian Besser of Congregation Beth Shalom, Bloomington, Doug Bauder, Director of the IU Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Student Support Services Office, and FairTalk Treasurer Phillip Cooper all rejoiced in the rulings while urging those in Indiana to stay focused on the pending HJR6 amendment. WFHB was on hand and broadcast the speeches live, we hear highlights now, in today’s Daily Local News feature report.
