Today, the Republican caucus of the Indiana General Assembly announced their legislative agenda for the 2015 session; Indiana University’s football coach, according to an Indiana University Bloomington news release and the Bloomington Herald-Tribune, says there are plans for a major new construction project at Memorial Stadium; On Friday, October 17 Indiana University will inaugurate its newest school on the Bloomington campus; Indiana University Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Mary Frances McCourt recently reported progress in IU’s efforts to lower educational costs and promote on-time graduation for students; A Bollywood film crew is set to begin production on a new movie based in Bloomington.

FEATURE
Last night the three hopefuls for Indiana’s 9th congressional seat this election met at Franklin college, and spoke for 90 minutes about their personal political platforms as well as fielding questions from the audience. John Krull, director of the college’s Pulliam School of Journalism was the moderator, and Franklin College students helped with the event by created video introductions of the candidates and hosting an informational session before the forum began. We hear Kroll ask several questions from the audience for today’s community report.

Two recent public forums in Indiana have addressed the spread of the virus Ebola to the United States; Within the next 30 days the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles plans to issue notice to Hoosiers entitled to refund checks; Indiana Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann recently announced the winners of Indiana’s “Excellence in Community Economic Development and Affordable Housing” award; The city has balanced their books for the upcoming year; The board of trustees of Indiana University approved the construction of an addition to the current School of Public and Environmental Affairs building to accommodate its graduate studies program.

FEATURE
On Friday, local criminal justice and community partner agencies announced Monroe County’s selection as one of just 12 communities in the state to be awarded funding for the creation of a new Mental Health Pilot Project and Mental Health Court from the state legislature. The City of Bloomington Housing and Neighborhood Developement Department, or HAND Department, is seeking input from residents on what are the most pressing housing needs; Hoosier Hills Food Bank (HHFB) is one of 50 food banks nationwide to win a grant through Walmart’s “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” Campaign; The Indiana State Police received a $567,000 federal grant from the Department of Justice office of Community Oriented Policing Services (or COPS) Anti-Methamphetamine Program.

Workers at Bloomingfoods are holding a rally today in support of efforts to unionize; A recent report from the I.U. School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) addresses local government benchmarks like spending, revenue, property tax base and levies, local option income tax rates and debt; There will be a public educational forum at Indiana University, Bloomington on Monday, October 13 to raise awareness on campus and in the Bloomington community about the current outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa; Indiana Republican Senator Dan Coats has introduced a new bill to address possible dangers of “home-grown terrorism” by suspending the Visa Waiver Program for countries that don’t comply with information-sharing practices.

In response to citizen concerns regarding Brown County Administrator Michael Thompson, there will be a special joint meeting of the Brown County Commissioners and the Brown County Council next Thursday, October 9th;The Hoosier State will receive a visit from President Barack Obama tomorrow, Friday October 3rd;US Senator Joe Donnelly recently welcomed the awarding of a $3 million grant from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, specifically from its Supportive Services for Veteran Families division, to the United Way of Central Indiana;The Bloomington wildlife advocacy group BANIDS is promoting new legislation to stop the city’s plans for the sharpshooting of deer in the Griffy Lake Nature Preserve.
