Daily Local News – July 2, 2014

Indiana is diversifying and aging. According to the latest US Census Report, Indiana’s average age is 37 point 4, up from 37 in 2012; A member of the Bloomington Utilities Service Board pressed the Utilities Department to consider cutting staff at a meeting June 30th; Indiana University has authored a bill of rights for student athletes. The bill contains 10 benefits for athletes – including a four-year scholarship commitment regardless of injury, illness, or performance, academic support, health guarantees, life skills development, a collective voice, and cutting edge technology; The Center for Sustainable Living in Bloomington is trying to help cut down the number of plastic bags ending up in landfills; A law student interning at a pro-life law firm authored a miscarriage burial bill that was signed into law by Indiana Governor Mike Pence last month.

One night every January the state dispatches groups to homeless shelters, abandoned buildings and tent cities across Indiana. The goal is to make an estimate of the state’s homeless population. The effort is known as a point-in-time homeless count, which is required by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD (“hud). This year’s study found slightly fewer homeless Hoosiers than years past. Assistant News Director Joe Crawford spoke with a state official about what that means and what we can learn from a study conducted on a single winter night. We bring you that interview for today’s WFHB feature exclusive.

How can anyone remember all the usernames and passwords we need these days? Perhaps the answer has been with us all along!
