With just a few days before the kick off of Welcome Week at Indiana University, Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton this morning announced plans to crack down on panhandling, better surveil city parks and increase police presence downtown. At a press conference this morning, Hamilton laid out a plan that also included forming committees tasked with evaluating public safety downtown and making recommendations to the city government. WFHB was on hand for the event, which took place outside the Monroe County Public Library. We bring you some of Hamilton’s comments now for today’s WFHB community report. That was Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton speaking this morning outside the Monroe County Public Library. Hamilton laid out a plan for addressing public safety and civility in downtown Bloomington. The plan includes new police surveillance cameras at Peoples Park, Seminary Park, the north end of the B-Line Trail and the area of the B-Line south of Kroger. The cameras could be operational in the next two weeks.

Hamilton also announced there will be an enhanced presence of law enforcement in the downtown area, and said he has asked officers to assure that we are appropriately enforcing panhandling laws. After he spoke, Hamilton was joined by Bloomington Police Chief Michael Diekhoff to answer questions from the press. WFHB News Director Joe Crawford was on hand and he has more on the event.
