Coal Country: Stop Mountaintop Removal

Play

Yesterday the environmental advocacy group Heartwood hosted a premiere of “Coal Country”, the award-winning new release by filmmakers Mari-Lynn Evans and Phylis Geller, documenting the courageous and inspiring stories of people living in Appalachian communities affected by mountaintop removal coal-mining and the entire cycle of coal power. Mountaintop removal uses enormous quantities of explosives to blast the tops off of mountains exposing underlying seams of coal. The resulting toxic rubble is pushed into adjacent valleys, burying rivers and streams and poisoning local communities. The screening also featured the national CD release party for the companion musical compilation CD, “Coal Country Music”, put together by Bloomington musician Jason Wilber. Before the screening, city councilwoman Isabel Piedmont and local residents Don Jordan and Buddy Bill introduced the film, alongside Heartwood founder Andy Mahler in this WFHB exclusive.
