Casseroles Bloomington

Play

In recent months IU students have protested the rising cost of higher education many times, once going so far as to temporarily shut down an IU Board of Trustees meeting. They joined students at universities throughout the country – most famously at University of California campuses – in resisting rising tuition and fees in the face of government cutbacks and increased student debt. But none of the American rallies have come close to drawing the numbers of those currently happening in Montreal, Quebec. Hundreds of thousands of protesters have filled the streets of Montreal every night for almost six weeks, first protesting student fee increases, and, most recently, fighting a new law that makes their public protests illegal without police permission. Now, in Bloomington, nightly marches have begun in solidarity with the Canadian rallies. WFHB Assistant News Director Joe Crawford was on hand at one of the events this past Saturday, and that march is the subject of today’s WFHB feature exclusive.
