Calling Out Indiana on Clean Water Act Violations

Play

A coalition of environmental organizations say Indiana pollution rules don’t meet Clean Water Act standards and ask the Environmental Protection Agency to intervene. The Hoosier Environmental Council, the state chapter of the Sierra Club, and the Environmental Law & Policy Center submitted a petition today that asks the EPA to correct serious flaws in the Indiana water pollution control program, administered by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. For example, Indiana has failed to adopt “antidegradation” rules designed to prevent new or expanded sources of pollution from degrading Indiana’s rivers, lakes and streams. Though this requirement has been part of the Clean Water Act for decades, Indiana has never implemented it. Listen in on a conference call with Sierra Club’s Bowden Quinn and Steve Francis, Rae Schnapp from the Hoosier Environmental Council, and Albert Ettinger, senior attorney for Environmental Law and Policy Center.
