On August 9, a police officer shot and killed an unarmed black teenager named Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. In the days since his death, Ferguson has been rocked by protests, some of which have turned violent.

Bring It On contributor Eric Love, William Vance, president of the Monroe County branch of the NAACP and Jacinda Townsend, assistant professor in IU’s Department of English for join William and Clarence to begin a dialogue on the distressing set of circumstances in Ferguson, Missouri.

Bev Smith and William Hosea welcome David Hummons and Greg Tourner from the Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males.

PART ONE
Established in 2001, The Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males network with groups with similar missions, such as the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males, the African American National Council, and local commissions throughout the state. They also develop action committees addressing problems of Black males in the areas of Education, Health, Criminal Justice and Employment and serve as a catalyst to promote positive public and private remedies to the multi-faceted problems confronting Black males in the Bloomington community and the resulting effects on the entire community at large.

Joining Bev and William on the show to elaborate on the progress and future initiatives of the commission are members David Hummons and Greg Tourner.

Today, Dr. Taylor has experience to share and a passion to assist young adults, students and student athletes understand and how to manage their transitions, and choices in the world of academics. Currently Dr. Taylor is the founder, President and CEO of Get Back Up, Inc. (GBU). Dr. Billy Taylor joins William and Bev by phone to discuss elements of his life and his passion.

In addition to being an author, Wilson is an inspirational speaker, guided meditation facilitator and life coach in jails, prisons, churches, and educational institutions.
