Bring It On! – August 19, 2013

Bev Smith and Liz Mitchell welcome Terry James, the great-great grandson of Ervin James, the founder of Jamestown, South Carolina.

The African American community of Jamestown, South Carolina has its origins in a 105-acre tract bought in 1870 by former slave Ervin James (1815-1872). James, who was determined to own his own farm instead of being dependent on sharecropping or tenant farming, bought the tract that was later divided into individual farms, by his five sons and a son-in-law.

Through the years, the James descendants have hosted reunions that, at times, have averaged 325 attendees. Recently, they sought to engage a wider community to attend these gatherings. As a result, the reunion theme has changed to “Celebrate Jamestown.”

Joining Bev and Liz by phone to talk about these family gatherings and the legacy of Ervin James is Terry James, his great-great grandson.

Headline news and local calendar events of interest to the African-American community.
