Bloomington City Council to Vote on Scooter Regulations

Play

The Bloomington City Council is considering legislation regulating scooter use in the city. The proposed ordinance regulates licensing, outlines requirements for scooter parking, condition and use, and sets fees.

Scooter companies Bird and Lime already operate more than 500 scooters in Bloomington. A third company, Spin Scooters, is working with the city to bring even more scooters to town. The city currently requires scooter companies to sign an operating agreement.

Community Engagement Coordinator Mary Catherine Carmichael said the city has received around a thousand responses to its online survey on scooter use. Community concerns are largely centered around safety – both for riders and non-riders. However, only a handful of community members expressed their concerns to the city council last night.e.

Council members were due to take a non-binding vote, or straw poll, on the proposed ordinance, but most members passed on that vote. The council will revisit the proposed scooter ordinance again on April 17th.
