bloomingOUT – January 15, 2015

Our hosts Erica Dorsey, Jeff Jewel, and Jeff Poling interview award winning filmmaker Bennett Singer about his documentary film work and background.  One of Bennett Singer’s many credits includes his Producer/Director work on the Brother Outsider film which can be found at http://rustin.org/ Our music tonight was “Rise Up” by Beyonce from 2013′s movie “Epic.”  We also heard the Out on Campus segment which discusses perceptions of homosexuality from the perspectives of religious texts.  Our other weekly segment, First Year Out talked about the real meaning behind things like Instagram “likes” and “friending” a romantic interest on social media. We would like to thank our guest Bennett Singer and new guest co-host Erica Dorsey for joining us tonight!

Tonight, our hosts Jeff Jewel and Ryne Shadday reflect on news from Alexandria, IN where the First United Methodist Church will close it’s doors on December 31st after over 100 years in existence due to the ousting of it’s gay music director, Adam Fraley. The discussion opens with our guests Justin Ford, a professor at the Kelley School of Business and Patrick Redmond, a teacher and a Kaylie Jones Books writer. Our music tonight was “Let it Go” (a Bonus Track) by Pentatonix from their That’s Christmas to Me release. We also heard a weekly segment, First Year Out with Nick Tumino, as well as Out on Campus. This week, our hosts Jeff Jewel and Jeff Poling interviewed president of Indy Pride, Chris Morehead. Chris Morehead talked about the history of the organization as well as Winter Pride. Our music was “I’m Still Hot” by Luciana (Feat. Betty White), a featured performer at Indy’s Winter Pride. We also heard from Nick Tumino in his weekly segment, First Year Out. This week we also heard from attendees at the Transgender Day of Remembrance at IU.

Today Jeff Jewel talked to Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Elizabeth Cure about her journey to

becoming a judge, her judicial philosophies, and other programs she has been involved in

throughout her life. We also listened to Melissa Etheridge’s Tuesday Morning, a song dedicated to

United 93 passenger Mark Bingham and his family, along with all other 9/11 heroes. Frankie and

Arielle were back with another episode of Out on Campus and we also heard from Nick Tumino in

First Year Out.

This week’s show features Danielle McClelland, director of the Buskirk Chumley theater in downtown Bloomington. Our hosts Jeff Jewel and Jeff Poling chat with McClelland about her path to Bloomington, the Pride Film Festival, and her life since she’s been in Bloomington. We also played Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down.” Frankie Salzman and Arielle Soussan are back this week with Out on Campus. This week, they talk with Leo about being an activist to try to eliminate hierarchies and the purpose of the Fag Demonstration event at Indiana University. We also premiere “First Year Out,” Nick Tumino’s take on his first year being out as gay and out in the real world after graduating college.

Hosts Jeff Jewel and Jeff Poling kick off the first live show back on air in November 2014 interviewed by News Director and bloomingOUT Executive Producer, Alycin Bektesh.  Tonight we will be introducing to you the current bloomingOUT crew, and discussion the future and vision of the show. Alycin Bektesh interviews IU campus correspondents Frankie Salzman and Arielle Soussan.  This week’s Out on Campus features an interview with Morghan Mohr, an undergraduate student at IU who is very active in the social justice and LGBTQ communities. In this interview she describes the purpose of the event as well as information about, SKY an organization Morghan Mohr helped to found and the organizer of the demonstration. Alycin Bektesh interviews WFHB intern, Hayley Bass. Our bloomingOUT News Editor Ryne Shadday gives this week’s update on Tuesday’s election day turnout and results. Alycin Bektesh interviews Producer Olivia Davidson and engineer, Carissa Barrett.

Associate Dean and Director at Weston Career Center/Washington University/St Louis and original show co-anchor Mark Brostoff reflects upon show history as well as his work with LGBT students then and now. Urban Indian and Louisiana attorney Becca Riall is back with talk about “Where is Your Teepee?” The Backdoor’s Nicci Boroski and IU GLBTSSS office staff member Xander Hardy stop by with the latest updates about the upcoming Summerfest to be held 5-6 September at various locations on IU Campus and in Bloomington.
This is the final show for original show anchor Helen Harrell, long time producer Carol Fischer and co-anchor Michael Reece as well as news director Josh Vidrich.
