Biographer Doug Wissing

Play

Doug Wissing delved into the secrets of the Central Intelligence Agency to learn about the nearly-anonymous man who essentially ran the spy organization for 12 years, from 1969 through 1981. Ben Evans of Crawfordsville, Indiana, was privy to, as well as intimately involved in, many of the most important episodes in American history during that time. Wissing’s new book is “Gentleman in the Shadows: Benjamin C. Evans and the Central Intelligence Agency,” published by the Indiana Historical Society Press. Evans was the exemplar of what’s now referred to as the “deep state,” the civil servants who run departments and agencies through successions of directors — and presidents.

Host Michael Glab goes one-on-one with Bloomington’s most fascinating people every Thursday at 5:30pm.
