April 15, 2011: The Dual Fronts of Planned Parenthood’s Battle with Lawmakers

Play

Last night the US Senate voted to reject an amendment to the GOP’s 2012 budget that would have eliminated all federal funding to Planned Parenthood. Disappointed Republican Senators like Indiana’s own Dan Coats make the claim that Planned Parenthood neither needs nor deserves taxpayer funding. Coats claims that the organization has nearly one billion dollars in net assets and that Planned Parenthood has taken in over $500 million in profits. In spite of protests from the right, Planned Parenthood will continue to provide preventative care with the help of federal money. Back home in Indiana, however, Planned Parenthood faces a much different set of threats from Hoosier lawmakers. In today’s feature, assistant news director Ryan Dawes speaks with Planned Parenthood of Indiana President, Betty Cockrum about abortion related legislation and how it would affect the care that Planned Parenthood provides to lady Hoosiers.
