Affordable Housing and Emergency Shelters: Public Comment

Play

Last month the Bloomington Community and Family Resources Commission hosted a public forum on affordable housing and shelters for the homeless. Commission members say they will consider the public input offered at the forum in searching for innovative ideas for programming and public policy to increase affordable housing options for more Bloomington citizens. On tomorrow’s program we’ll hear members of the public share emotional and sometimes very personal stories about their own struggle with poverty and homelessness, and today we hear from a captain on the front lines of the battle. Joel Rekas is director of Shalom Center, a local daytime facility for the homeless. Rekas offers a historical perspective on homelessness and housing trends in the first of our two-part series from “There’s No Place Like Home: Affordable Housing and Emergency Shelters”.
