"Today marks the sixtieth anniversary of Pacifica Radio. On April 15, 1949 at 3:00 p.m., a charismatic conscientious objector named Lewis Hill sat before a microphone and said, “This is KPFA Berkeley.” With that, KPFA went on the air, and the first listener-supported radio station in the United States was born."
The above text comes from our friends at Democracy Now!, which today dedicated its broadcast to this special anniversary. Check it out here.
I think Lew Hill would be proud of what we've got here at WFHB and the success of the community media movement today, and the future looks bright - recent FCC filings will result in hundreds of new community radio stations, along with a doubling of the number of Native American stations from 33 to 66. Community radio is alive and THRIVING.
