Local Voices To Be Heard By Millions on Tuesday

On Tuesday, February 23 and Wednesday, February 24, Bloomington’s community radio station WFHB will once again unite listeners with people all across the country to raise awareness of the defining social justice issue of our time. WFHB is one of nearly 200 radio stations carrying the National Homelessness Marathon, a 14-hour live broadcast featuring the voices and stories of homeless people from around the U.S. WFHB will air the entire fourteen-hour program, currently in its thirteenth year, starting at 7pm on Tuesday and ending at 9am on Wednesday, when the station returns to its regularly-scheduled programming. New this year is a half-hour live remote broadcast from Bloomington at 2am Wednesday morning, on the topic of family homelessness, featuring local homeless people and social service advocates and moderated by local talk radio luminary Darryl Neher, live from a local homeless shelter.

MLK Day In Review

Whew, it's over! As we load the final audio onto the website, another intense MLK Day draws to a close. This year was more productive than last, with more volunteers, more PSAs, more day-of audio, and a problem-free live broadcast using the new remote broadcast system we launched a year ago today.

Here's the audio of keynote speaker Jesse Jackson's speech, the cleanest copy available on the Internet!

You can hear the entire live feed here, including Jesse Jackson's keynote address:

And the kids did great on our annual youth-produced documentary "A King's Legacy" - that's on our website too:

Jesse Jackson live on WFHB as part of MLK Day programming

On Monday, January 18th, Bloomington Community Radio WFHB will once again dedicate a significant portion of our broadcast day to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year will mark the seventh year that WFHB has partnered with the City of Bloomington and local service agencies.

Our day of community service includes “A Day On, Not a Day Off – live from the Buskirk-Chumley Theater” – our volunteers will cap off the day’s activities by producing a live radio broadcast of the city’s MLK birthday celebration. Tune in to hear this year's keynote speaker, the Rev. Jesse Jackson join with the Bloomington community to celebrate a day of service to others. Listen live at 7:00pm over the airwaves at 91.3 FM or on the internet at www.wfhb.org.

Didn't get to see Richard Dawkins? WFHB's got you covered

Bystanders might have thought there was a rock concert going on at the Indiana University Auditorium based on the line to get in, which snaked around Showalter Fountain and down the street to the HPER building. But no, it wasn’t Bob Dylan - it was evolutionary biologist, author, and atheist Richard Dawkins. An event organizer says as many as a thousand people were turned away because the auditorium was filled to capacity. Click here for an hour-long edit of Dawkins' Bloomington lecture, organized by the Indiana Memorial Union Board and the Secular Alliance of IU and recorded on-location at the IU Auditorium on October 12, 2009.

Can You Be Good Without God?

Can you be good without God? WFHB News is proud to present a public debate on Monday October 19th at 7pm in Woodburn Hall featuring local pastor Dan Waugh and minister-turned-atheist Dan Barker. One says you can be good without God, the other says you cannot. That's the "Battle of the Dans" - a public debate hosted by radio personality Darryl Neher, Monday October 19th at 7pm in Woodburn Hall, a production of the WFHB News and Public Affairs Department.

Area 10 drops BT Access

Just received the message below from Randy Paul, an organizer of unionizing efforts at BT Access and Rural Transit auxiliary bus services. Paul says the Area 10 Agency on Aging is dropping the BT Access program and its director blames him for going public with criticisms of management. Paul says he will speak at the city council meeting tonight. His message to us and to city council members is posted below the following links to some of our coverage of the BT Access union movement.  A response from the Area 10 director follows below Paul's message.

WFHB wins state journalism award!

Chad Carrothers here, in Indianapolis at the annual awards banquet of the Society of Professional Journalists. I am proud to announce WFHB has just won first place in the category of Best Social Justice Reporting! This is for a piece on generational homelessness exploring the story of a father and son who have found that being homeless together has bonded them in a way that transcends typical father-son relationships.  You can listen to it by CLICKING HERE
This feature report was produced at WFHB for the 2008 National Homelessness Marathon and aired on hundreds of stations.  Our 2009 report was even better so we'll be sure to submit that piece for next year's awards.
