Herald-Times Sold to NY Publisher

The Herald-Times is among eight Indiana newspapers sold to Gatehouse Media.

South-Bend based Schurz Communications Inc. purchased The Herald-Times, in 1966. Scott Schurz addressed members of the Bloomington-based newspaper this morning, at 9 a.m. The former publisher, along with departing Editor Bob Zaltsberg announced the paper, along with other holdings of Schurz Communications’ publishing division, will be sold Friday.

Gatehouse Media, based in New York, will acquire The Herald-Times, along with seven other Indiana newspapers: The Reporter Times in Martinsville, The Mooresville-Decatur Times, The South Bend Tribune, The Times-Mail in Bedford, The Notre Dame Insider in South Bend, The Evening World in Spencer, and The Hoosier Topics also are part of the sale.

Zaltsberg announced his retirement last year; His last day is this week. A source at The Herald-Times says layoffs are expected at the paper this week.

Hoosier Times newspapers, which includes The Herald-Times and publications in Spencer, Bedford and Martinsville, cut 17 jobs in August, 2018. Those cuts were also announced by Schurz Communications, who cited rising newsprint costs and reduced revenues in their decision.
